com_xbfilms v0.4.1 (Release Candidate 3)
20th February 2021

xbfilms filmsxbFilms is a component for cataloguing books you have read and reviews of them. Version 0.4.1 should still not really be used on production sites (although I am ;-) ). It now comes as a package with a supporting component, xbPeople, for administration of people and characters which may be shared with xbBooks.

The primary intended user is someone wanting to keep a record of films they have seen with a reminder of the plot and what their reaction was.

Documentation  Demo Page

xbFilms provides views into a relational database of films, people, characters and reviews.

People may be directors, cast, crew, or real people appearing in the film. One person may have several roles in different films. A distinction is made between real people and fictional characters.

A review is of a single film, but a film may have several reviews: a one-to-many relationship.

The people and characters tables are be shared with the xbBooks component. A film director may also write a book and appear in films as an actor and be the subject of a biography.

You can define categories and tags to suit your particular preferences. For example you might consider genres to be mutually exclusive and so use them as categories (an item can only belong to one category), or you might think that a film can be both a historical fiction and a thriller - the genres are not mutually exclusive so you would use tags to identify them.

Categories are exclusive - an item can only belong to one category. Both tags and categories can be arranged in a hierarchy.

There are two system generated categories:  "Uncategorised" and "Imported". Uncategorised is used by default for all items that you don't assign to another category, and Imported is the default for items you import from CSV or SQL files - although you can override this during the import.

In addition there are dedicated fields for production and technical details as well as links to people for director(s). producer(s) other crew (with function), actors (with role) and more.

People have fields for nationality and year of birth and death, as well as name and biography. Reviews can have a reviewer name, date, format of the book reviewed. The full list of fields available for each item type is given in the Documentation. Aside from a title (or rating for a review) all fields are optional, you can keep as much or as little information as you have for each film,

Reviews have a star rating on a 7 point scale, this may be an option for specifying a different maximum in a future version. In addition to 1 to 7 stars, I have added the ability to grant no stars for things that are so bad that I don't even finish watching them. This is an optional setting.
